Dr. John D. Franklin — Dedicated to Innovation and Excellence

Dr. John D. Franklin created Specialists in Plastic Surgery, P.C. with a firm dedication to providing his patients optimal aesthetic results using advanced technologies and innovative techniques. Dr. Franklin's extensive training and experience are evidenced in his Curriculum Vitae, and they provide his patients the assurance that they are under the care of a consummate plastic surgery expert. Through the International Centers of Excellence, Inc. (ICE) organization that he founded, Dr. Franklin is also dedicated to establishing a worldwide network of Medical Services committed to Integrity, Compassion, and Experience in providing unparalleled patient care.

A Background of Achievement and Innovation

Dr. Franklin was the first Plastic Surgeon in Tennessee to be fellowship trained in micro-vascular reconstructive surgery. After completing both a General Surgery and Plastic Surgery Residency at Vanderbilt University and Affiliated Hospitals in 1977, he spent a year in Melbourne, Australia as a Research Fellow in Microsurgery and Clinical Assistant in Plastic Surgery. He then returned to Vanderbilt in 1979 to teach and practice Plastic and Microsurgery. He was promoted to Associate Professor before moving to Chattanooga.

Erlanger Hospital has an association with the University of Tennessee. In 1988, Dr. Franklin became the first Professor and Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Chattanooga Unit. He was involved with teaching and training Plastic Surgery Residents almost 20 years before entering private practice full time.

Dr. Franklin has been involved with developing and improving upon numerous innovative techniques during his career. One special area of interest is wound healing. His philosophy is that "many individuals can perform a new or innovative technique; but if one does not understand the 'principles' of would healing, they are poorly equipped to manage unexpected results when they occur." The only way a surgeon will never have a complication is to "never operate."

A Sampling of Dr. Franklin's Accomplishments

Some of Dr. Franklin's clinical accomplishments are:

Research at Vanderbilt and in Australia

During his faculty days at Vanderbilt and in Australia, he did research on Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). Stanley Cohen Ph.D. was one of the researchers that discovered EGF and was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1985. Franklin showed that topical EGF improved the quality of wound healing in rabbit ears. Dr. Cohen advised and furnished the EGF. (Plastic and Reconstructive Surg., 64:766, 1979.)

While in Australia, one of Franklin's projects was to study the effects of cooling on free tissue survival and upon returning to Vanderbilt demonstrated with Lillian Nanney Ph.D. the endothelial changes in the post capillary venules. For the first time, the pathophysiology in the no-reflow phenomenon was demonstrated with the electron microscope. J.Surgery Res., 34:271, 1983 - Brit.J.Plast.Surg., 33:353, 1980.

A New Focus - International Centers of Excellence, Inc. (ICE)

In more recent years, Franklin has focused more on business. Plastic Surgery is becoming more accepted and more individuals are seeking cosmetic improvement in their appearance. In addition, more practitioners, business, and consumers are being attracted to the "cosmetic" arena. The "public" is being bombarded by advertisement and other "hype." How can an individual be assured, with a reasonable level of confidence, that the provider of these services is ethical and has the individual's best interest as the top priority?

One potential solution is International Centers of Excellence, Inc. (ICE). ICE is in the process of establishing a worldwide network that will identify those Medical Services committed to deliver with Integrity, Compassion, and Experience. At the present time those services are focused on Cosmetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. www.ice-network.net
